Often risky examples for dogs and cats: chocolate and cocoa products; grapes and raisins; onion, garlic, leek and similar alliums; xylitol in gum / sweeteners; alcohol; caffeinated drinks; raw yeast dough; some bones and very fatty scraps. Avocado, macadamia, and some plants can also be risky depending on species.
Signs vary by food and amount: vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, tremors, drooling, unsteadiness, or loss of appetite. Do not wait on “just a little” — especially with chocolate, grapes, or xylitol — ask a veterinarian.
Home habits: Keep counters clear, close the bin, don’t leave guest snacks on the floor, and keep human-food “love” under control. Puppies and curious pets are at higher risk.
