How is a microchip applied?
For most pets it is a brief injection, similar to a vaccine. The chip is not GPS. The veterinarian places it, scans the number and records it. What it is: what is a microchip.

In short
A standard chip stores a number in a capsule — no battery, no location signal. It is usually placed under the skin between the shoulder blades, just behind the neck. The exact spot is the veterinarian’s technique.
It often takes a few minutes. Healthy animals do not need general anaesthesia. Sedation may be discussed if the pet is very anxious or another procedure is combined — it is not a rule for everyone.
Typical clinic flow
The pet is held or settled. The chip is injected. The veterinarian scans to confirm the number. Registration follows the booklet and official system; “we put a chip in” at home does not mean the record is complete.
Rules in Türkiye: is a microchip mandatory — official texts sit with the Ministry of Agriculture. Travel plans may include a pet passport.
What the pet feels
Most describe a brief sting, like a vaccine. Some pets do not react; some flinch. That is a moment, not a pain score.
Afterwards
Mild tenderness or short licking can happen. Swelling, discharge, clear lameness or dullness should not wait. Chips rarely migrate; a later scan can check position. Do not try to “adjust” it at home.

Travelling abroad with pets
There is no single paperwork list for every country and every year. Check the destination’s official rules first, then the airline, then book the clinic. A website summary does not replace the regulation.
