Cat not drinking

Cats visit the bowl less often than dogs, and wet food already supplies some water. That does not explain drinking nothing. No urine, or a male cat straining without producing any, is not personality — the second picture is urgent.

In short

Cats evolved to take moisture from prey. A dry-food cat may use the bowl more; a wet-food cat may use it less. Neither explains stopping altogether.

“I never see it” is not the same as not drinking. Watching the bowl, trying a fountain or noting the diet helps you track — it must not hide illness.

How to tell if they drink

Shared bowls make it unclear who drank. A separate bowl, a quiet spot, daily cleaning and (optional) a fountain help some cats; they are not a cure.

Fewer clumps in the litter, dark urine or no urine at all can matter more than the bowl. Vomiting or diarrhoea speeds loss: vomiting in cats, diarrhoea in cats.

Dehydration clues

Sticky gums, sunken eyes, skin that stays tented, dullness or no appetite are rough home signs — measurement belongs at the exam. Kidneys come up often in seniors; this is not a diagnosis.

Do not wait if

A male cat that strains and produces no urine, or visits the tray repeatedly empty, is treated as a possible blockage — an emergency. A female cat that cannot urinate should not wait either.

Open-mouth breathing, collapse, no food beyond a day, or dehydration with repeated vomiting: urgency. Also cat not eating.
